!! BREAKTHROUGH ON GLUE TRAPS - AUGUST 2010
The VAFA has just received written confirmation from the office of the Minister for Agriculture Joe Helper that he will not exempt pest controllers when the current notice expires on the 31.12.2010. This means that as of that date glue traps will be entirely prohibited in Victoria!
This is a great outcome for animal welfare and for Victoria. We done to all who supported this campaign.
The below is a reminder of why we
have fought to end the sale of glue traps in Victoria.

Glue traps still sold in Melbourne’s mainstreets – animal advocates angry at Minister’s backflip
27.10.2009
President of the Victorian Advocates for
Animals Lawrence Pope said today,
“Glue traps are barbaric. Skin is torn. Animals scream in pain. They lie in a pool of faeces, urine and glue crying in pain for hours or days. They are banned in ACT and Tas. Ireland banned them in 2005. Victoria was to ban them under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 2008. Because, according to the current Dept of Primary industries Glue Traps FACT Sheet:
A scientific review of rodent control methods concluded
that glue traps are one of the most inhumane methods
of rodent control “because of the enormous distress
these traps cause, even if the trapped animals are
found after just a few hours and then humanely
dispatched ... rodents are likely to experience pain and
distress through being trapped, the physical effects of
the adhesive on functioning (e.g. suffocation), and
trauma resulting from panic and attempts to escape,
such as forceful hair removal, torn skin and broken
limbs. After three-five hours, animals have been
reported as covered in their own faeces and urine.
When boards are collected, animals are also often
squealing; one pest control operative even described
them as "screaming their heads off". Some rodents also
bit through their own limbs to escape.”
We thank the Minister Joe Helper for his decision to ban glue traps without exception in line with the expectations of the community for the humane treatment of animals and that he has stopped pandering to industry pressure groups.”
Email the Minister NOW and tell him what you think of glue traps and thank him for his decision to close the loophole. Well done.
